Second Presidential Debate Initial Fact Check

Though I am fond of checking the “Fact Check” articles of the mainstream media, which themselves often are false if not outright lies, we will present a preliminary basic Fact Check on the major issues in the Second Presidential Debate of 2012. Many of the same points were covered which we covered in our First Fact Check series, and both candidates seemed to double down on their positions, Romney adding more detail on some issues, and Obama mostly repeating the same lies. The debate started off as strong for Romney, and quite week for Obama. Obama was nervous, had little control of the dialogue, and instead of coming out “swinging” as we were told, had to back off to a more aggressive Romney who expected this new more energetic Obama. Romney polished some of the points he had made in the first debate, and had a greater amount of detail in deriding some of Obama’s misleading or false statements (such as 5 million new jobs, and Oil Output is up etc). Obama’s tax hike on Small Business, and Fact Checking the “3%” Claim

In a previous post, we took on the media’s “Fact Check” effort in the first 2012 Presidential Debate. One consistently tricky argument was the issue of Obama’s tax hike on the top 3% of small business. Romney accepted this figure, but countered that these few provide half of the jobs in the small business world, and a quarter of the total US jobs. Therefore raising taxes on them would hurt the economy and job creation right when it is needed most. In that previous article I stated that Romney was generally correct, as the pattern gathered from various sources of evidence showed that it is the top brackets of small business that disproportionately provide the bulk of the jobs in the category. However, thought it was clear that the tax rate would hit businesses that create a large number of US jobs, verifying the exact 3% to 50% statement proved to be difficult. No data seemed to be easily available which could provide that level of precision, though no data discredited the claim either. Checking the “Fact Checks” – First Presidential Debate

A full response to the first Presidential Debate is reported in this article. Below, we stick to making a true “Fact Check” and checking the mainstream media’s “Fact Checks” claims… Just because it is a bar of soap, does not mean it is necessarily clean. 5 Million Private-Sector Jobs in past 30 months. America Does Best When the Middle Class Does Best. Oil and natural gas production are higher than they’ve been in years $5 Trillion Tax Cut for the Rich Increasing military defense spending by $2 trillion that the military didn’t even ask for Donald Trump is a small Business The top 3% of small business employ half the workers employed by small business Obama has a plan to reduce $4 trillion from the Deficit Food Stamps 5 Million Private-Sector Jobs in past 30 months. The debate opened with Obama claiming to have created 5 million jobs in the last 30 months. While that number may be roughly correct (perhaps more like 4.5 million) a more complete view of the situation is that the number of jobs created since February 2009 (after his first full month in office) is less than 1 million. Romney – Obama Debate, Fact Checking the “Fact Check”

The media has come out in a surprising and homogeneous cry that Romney won the first 2012 presidential debate in decisive fashion. I was less impressed with the contrast in performance, but I suppose I’ll take it. Undoubtedly Romney seemed more relaxed, assertive and better informed. He also made a bit more sense. So I would be in agreement that Romney squeezed out a small victory, mostly by the advantage of being slightly more correct, but my thinking was actually that his chance to completely dominate the debate and deliver knock-out blows was lost. In fact, Obama did quite a bit better than I expected and Romney did quite a bit worse than I hoped. So the question remaining is why the massively pro-Obama media came out out so massively disappointed by their man, and why they preached so uniformly that Romney delivered a decisive victory performance. The answer is composed of a few factors, more or less in order of importance: Expectations. Though to the informed crowd, it is well known that Obama is a poor debater, rather hopeless without a teleprompter, and not a particularly intelligent individual, the constant media worship he has received has led most people to forget this. California Bans “Gay Therapy” for minors – “I told you So…”

Governor Jerry Brown, who was elected in California (defeating former ebay CEO Meg Whitman) to make the tough decisions needed to keep California out of bankruptcy and balance its spending-spree budget, has instead continued the California tradition of budget gimmicks and “kicking the can down the road” for later administrations and generations to deal with. The budget he has signed, assumes the voters will approve more than $8 billion in new taxes this November, and seizes over $3.1 billion from local redevelopment agencies, a violation of the voter’s will and likely unconstitutional (and bound to end up bogged down in court). It further assumes, that even if the voters passed the new taxes, they would not have a detrimental effect on the economy and drive even more people and businesses away from California, which they will. He did make some cuts, in the worse possible places such as eliminating Healthy Families, targeting poor children and their health care, but kept the vast state worker union machine and public education bureaucracy intact and in control. Seniors to Suffer the wrath of Democrat “Compassion”

The partisanship guiding certain left leaning organizations in this election is simply mind boggling. In Florida, and elsewhere, low-income senior citizens are sometimes taxed out of their homes by local property taxes. Being retired, on fixed incomes and not always in the best of health, these seniors are able to make ends meet by using small earnings from their life savings, annuities, or social security payments. Having no rent or mortgage, the money is sufficient for food, health care and basic expenses. Maybe they have some left over for occasional presents to grandchildren or the infrequent small vacation. When high property taxes are added to the mix, especially as property values have risen greatly in the past decades, the homes many times become unaffordable and senior citizens end up losing the homes they worked for and lived in for much of their lives. The local governments issuing these property taxes and throwing these low-income seniors out into the street often do not wish to do so but have no choice.
