Gaza – The Big Picture and What Israel Should Do (have done)

Nearing what could be the end, or hopefully simply a lull, of this round of fighting in Gaza, it is important to take a step back, look at the big picture, and see what Israel if anything has achieved in what it should have achieved. Throughout this latest conflict I have published several articles discussing various aspects like Kerry’s intervention and The Tactics and Strategy and The demonstrations and Media. I have also covered, the Obama administration’s position and attempt to pressure Israel, and Israel’s flawed PR efforts. War Against The Tunnels How it Began The Danger of Multiple Rounds of Fighting Next Round Improvements and The Economic Boom The Rockets and The Disengagement The Fallacies of the Air Campaign So What To Do? Gaza Background, What IS Gaza? In this last area specifically, it has been painful to see a massive (relative to its size) international movement of “Pro-Israel” sentiment mobilized largely to no end. Jews and non-Jews alike, around the world flocked to social media to post an endless stream of often creative messages (broadly accurate but not always) whose sum total was “Hamas is mean!”. Gilad Shalit Coming Home!? – and lot more news…

Shocking announcement that Israel and Hamas have signed an agreement to bring about Gilad’s return home, and of course the release of over 1000 terrorists. First of all, I am elated to hear of the news of Gilad coming home, great news in the new year! I hope its true and he is well. Many concerns of course… I hope he has not been tortured too badly (for sure at first there almost certainly was some form of it, but cruel cowardly dogs as they are they bore quickly of that). I hope he has not been brainwashed too much, has not been converted to Islam, and remains essentially the same person he was… hard to imagine what has transpired. He certainly will have an interesting story to tell. The worse possible scenario is a case of complete indoctrination where he actually is released and becomes a propaganda tool form them. Unlikely I believe, both because Hamas knew from day one he was to be traded, and as far as I understand (though it remains disputed) he was captured only because he was wounded and perhaps unconscious, and as a Israeli combat soldier, I am sure he has and will [...]

On the Palestinian UN Bid – Director’s cut – Great for a basic understanding beyond the headlines.

Sept 22 2011 The Director’s Cut to an Article I submitted here: The Palestinian UN Bid; The Danger and Folly The world in large part, with very important exceptions, seems to be backing the PLO Chairman and PNA President Mahmoud Abbas’s UN bid for full or partial membership of a Palestinian State. On the face it, I am sure the world citizen is tempted to ask: “And why not?” Of course to many who are avowed enemies of Israel, this is quite a positive development. But to many well meaning people in many well meaning countries, who in fact wish Israel no harm, it appears so as well. After all, “We”, believers of freedom, self-determination, human dignity and peace should support a people trying to achieve those goals. Beyond that, one may make the easy assumption that this bid for statehood is a watershed moment for ending the bitter, wretched, conflict that has been plaguing both the people of the Levant and the world. The aforementioned perspective is reasonable in light of the typical global media coverage of the conflict.
