Election Ploys Over – Israel goes back to Evicting Jews from Judea

This is the story of the beautiful Jewish village of Ma’ale Rehava’am. One had to read and re-read the headlines just a few weeks ago when the Netanyahu government ordered the removal of palestinian activists from the illegal tent city they had built (named Bab Al-Shams) in the E1 corridor connecting Jerusalem and Ma’aleh Adumim. Even though this was not really a real settlement of any kind, but rather a protest circus, it is hard to recall Israel ever removing any Arab from anywhere. It is true, Israel sometimes deals harshly (as it should) with people involved in terrorism (and has in the past bulldozed their residences), but despite common perception to the contrary, peaceful Arabs live in a sort of legal utopia in the West Bank. This is especially true in Area C (under Israeli jurisdiction), while those under Palestinian Authority rule are often victim of their own government’s abuses; Gaza being a case in point. Those under Israeli jurisdiction however, enjoy all the services and security provided by the Israeli government (they frequently call Israeli police in any dispute they have with other Arabs or Jews) including electricity, water, transportation and infrastructure while bearing none of the responsibilities [...]

The Next Coalition

Netanyahu risked elections in order to get a strong and stable ruling coalition that can tackle the challenges facing Israel, including Iran, Hamas, the Arab Spring, demographic forces and a dire global economic outlook. Minutes after polls closed, we reported some of the possible expectations and some unique predictions. The Lighthouse was dead-on in predicting that Yesh Atid would have more seats in the next election than the media had predicted. We also feared though were less sure about the Likud-Beiteinu coalition doing worse than predicted. Before the election, the Likud and Lieberman together controlled 42 (27 and 15 respectively) seats together. After they announced the merger, I predicted that the united front would lose seats. It definitely did with the early exit polling results indicating they now have only 31 seats between them. There are two reasons for this large drop. The first is that Lieberman outside of his independent party loses much of the appeal of his traditional Russian voter. On the other hand (though it is a smaller effect) some Likud supporters, especially Sephardi voters, may be turned off by Lieberman’s inclusion, probably to Shas’ benefit. Election Results and Coalition Building

The polls have just closed nationwide in Israel and now the race for results and the winning coalition begin. The last polls showed the Likud-Lieberman coalition obtaining about 34 seats, The Jewish Home 14 seats Shas 11 Yesh Atid 11 UTJ 6 Labor 17 Livni 7 These are the last poll results available a few days back for the major parties. It is interesting to note that Likud-Beiteinu camp actually loses a significant amount of seats compared to what they currently have. I warned about this phenomena as soon as the merger was announced… a large part of Lieberman’s Russian supporters will not vote or know to vote for a Likud ticket. This has been made worse by the fact Avigdor Lieberman has been quiet in the last period due to the indictment against him. However, I also think polling may be under-estimating the Russian vote towards Likud due to polling difficulties. In any event, I believe that it will be Yesh Atid that will do better than expected as that is the trend being observed. I hope the bulk of those voters are not otherwise Likud voters but that Lapid manages to take voters away from the leftist camp. [...]
