Politics has Hijacked Justice

Though I had been hoping to avoid this already over-covered subject, the endless stream of headlines on this single incident that stink of a political hijacking of due process and the American Justice system is too much to ignore. I have to say, that though of course I am sorry that Trayvon is dead as I am sure everyone is including George Zimmerman, I am not particularly fond of either of the protagonists. So why write about this? To be frank, it is not that the incident itself which is very newsworthy, not outside local news coverage anyways, nor that I find either of the characters interesting nor extraordinarily good, bad, brave nor cowardly. Unfortunately, murders happen in the US daily, and they happen in Florida daily. There are approximately 45 murders each day in the United States, and as shocking as that may sound, that is after steadily declining violent crime rates in the US since the early mid 1990s. New reports showed that 2010 was the safest year (in regards to violent crime) in forty years! In any event, 45 people are still murdered (not shot in arguably self defense) each day in the US. Time for Rick Santorum to Man Up (and other widoms)

A lot hangs in the balance… Win or lose… this is still far from over after Florida tomorrow. Newt should dig in for the long haul, and look ahead to caucus states, and Western states coming up. However, losing Florida to Romney would definitely make a Newt nomination very difficult, though not impossible. On the other hand, even with Newt winning Florida, the road ahead is full of difficulty. Romney’s well oiled machine, money, and GOP establishment behind him make it difficult to topple him from the front runner position. Or so they would make it seem… really the biggest thing in Romney’s corner is the media. The media can easily make or break people (ask Dan Quayle). No amount of ad dollars can equal what the media can blast and re-blast for free. The Internet does little more than repeat it in different ways. Earlier, when Newt simply seemed like a worthy underdog who performed very well in the debates, the media had no problem reporting this. Iowa – Santorum and on..

All right, Santorum gained a few points in my book, by his talk at what he thought was probably a close win near the end of the reporting in Iowa yesterday: His story about his grandfather’s hands digging freedom for him in a Pennsylvania mine. His remark about a best friend being one who knows your life song, and sings it back to you when you forget the words. His remark about Obama’s remark about middle americans “clinging to their guns and their bibles” Santorum said.. “Thank Gd”, eliminating manufacturing corporate tax was not bad either, though his unequal tax treatment of diff industries (just can’t walmart can’t move to china is not ideologically good) … and must give credit to the strategy, nose to the ground, hard work, with little money, ignoring the pundits, and devising his own iowa momentum strategy and focusing on it and carrying through. that was impressive. Too bad his “conservatism” comes simply from his faith (Catholic), not a true conservative, his loyalties lie with unions and poor workers… he can’t shake the picture of union mine workers like his grandfather. for his hard work, and social conservatism and religiousness, he isnt a true conservative, [...]
